The Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO) Network asks all parties and election candidates to support our manifesto and champion access, equality, and inclusion for Disabled people and Deaf people.

We ask that all candidates commit to:

Work to fully implement UNCRPD

Join our campaign to ensure full implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) including optional protocols. Campaign for full inclusion and accessibility based on the human rights and social models of disability.

Meaningful Engagement with DPO’s

We are asking for a whole of government commitment to meaningful engagement. Our positive recent engagements with DCEDIY on the National Disability Strategy are examples of what we call co-creation of plans and are working well, however, there are still many examples of poor tokenistic engagement, particularly with some Government Departments and agencies.

Ensure appropriate Structures of Engagement

Engagement with the State needs to clearly distinguish between disabled individuals, DPOs and Service Providers, all of which are important, however the views of disabled communities must be prioritised and primarily represented by DPOs. (Art 4.3 & GC7)

Funding for DPOs

– Support us to inform policy and services
Often DPOs are unfunded volunteer organisations and this is a barrier to effective partnership with the State. We are calling for sustainable multi-annual core funding in line
with the call to resource DPOs under the UNCRPD. This has been promised but not delivered.

The DPO Network Position paper on the role of DPOs in Ireland is being referred to by DCEDIY and is a clear guide for States responsibility about engagement with DPOs in Ireland.
